Theme: Geography (How Humans Change Their Environment)
Throughout global history, human societies in various nations and regions have changed their physical environments to meet their needs. Societies have built structures, removed vegetation and resources, and modified the land to meet their needs. These changes have often had different results.
Task: Select two different nations/regions and for each
• Explain why the society modified their environment
• Explain how the people of that specific nation/region modified their physical environment
• Discuss the effect this modification had on that nation/region

Through times in history, many people change their physical environment to meet their needs. Societies build structures, remove resources and modify their land in order to meet these needs. The building of the Suez canal and the use of trench warfare in world war I helped many different societies adapt to their physical surroundings. These changes in the environment were done in order tp make life easier for the people that would be using them.
The Suez Canal is a man made waterway between Europe and Asia. In order to go from Europe to Asia, the Suez Canal has to travel through many countries throughout Europe and Asia. The Suez Canal is one of the busiest canals in the world, with thousands of ships traveling through it. The main purpose of the Suez Canal is to allow water transportation between Europe and Asia without going around Africa.(To whom was this most important to?) It directly connects the two; it begins in the Mediterranean Sea and ends in the red sea, which makes it very useful when it comes to trading.(How was the canal useful in trading?) The canal was successful in creating an easy way from Europe to Asia, but it also created some problems.( What problems have occured?) Many fish species traveled through the canal into the unnative waters on the other side.(What was the fish species?) The construction of the Suez Canal shows how people are willing to dramatically change their environment in order to meet their needs.( How did this change there enviroment?)
The use of trench warfare during world war one is another example on how humans have to change their environment to fit their needs.( What is trench warfare and was it useful?) During world war one, both the allied and central powers dug giant ditches form, which the war would be fought. Many of the battles took place in the Western Front and stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss Frontier with France. This was a new method to fighting, instead of all men being visible on the battle field, they would send attacks to the other trench and fight from there. The use of trench warfare had a negative effect on society in many ways. Over 200,000 men died in the trenches of WW1, most of who died in battle, but many died from disease and infections brought on by the unsanitary conditions.(What kind of diseases did the men die from?) Being in the unsanitary conditions with thousands of other men enabled disease to spread quickly. Using trench warfare in world war I portrays what people are willing to do to the environment in order to meet their needs. The environment plays a very important role in how people conduct their lives. In some cases, people will go to any extent to modify the environment so it benefits them and society. The creation of the Suez canal and the trenches during world war I show that people will modify their environment to fulfill their everyday needs.
